Hedge Trimming in Leeds, From Routine Cuts to Staged Reductions

Get a quote

We provide hedge trimming in Leeds for gardens and larger sites, along with heavier reductions for overgrown hedges.

Every job starts by identifying the plants and checking for nesting birds, because those two things tell us how far we can cut and when. That way, you don't end up with bare patches that may never recover.

  • Written scope of work
  • Tree protection checked before cutting
  • Waste and stump work made clear

Professional hedge trimming in Leeds

Our hedge trimming keeps a hedge neat, within its line and healthy enough to go on doing its job. Trimming controls new growth while reduction tackles too much height or width, and many hedges need a little of both.

When we trim, we shape the hedge so that light reaches the lower growth. Cutting the sides inwards at the bottom, year after year, tends to leave a thin base and a top-heavy look.

Our hedge cutting and reduction services

Before deciding how far to go on any of the jobs below, we work out what the plants will regrow from.

Routine trimming

This means cutting back young growth and restoring a neat outline on a healthy hedge. A formal evergreen boundary usually needs different treatment from a mixed native hedge, so we'll suggest timing for yours.

Height reduction

When an established hedge has grown above its intended line, we lower the top and explain how that will change its look and its long-term maintenance.

Side reduction and clearance

Where growth narrows a pavement, blocks your view from the drive or reaches past a boundary, we take bulk off the faces. The line we set gives enough clearance without harming the plants.

Leylandii and other conifers

Many conifers, including Leyland cypress, don't reliably regrow from old brown wood, so taking a large leylandii too far can leave a bare face. We'll tell you how much width we can realistically remove.

Beech, laurel, privet and mixed hedges

These hedges respond differently to pruning, and each has its own best timing. If you don't know what yours is, a close-up photo usually gets us started.

Staged renovation of neglected hedges

An overgrown hedge can often be rescued, as long as there's enough healthy growth to work with. One that has gone bare at the base may not thicken up after a single hard cut, so we'd usually reduce it over more than one visit and agree a longer-term plan.

Hedge care for homes, rentals and managed sites

A homeowner might need one front boundary trimmed, while a landlord or business may need access kept clear at several entrances. Tell us the type of property and what you need, and we'll say how we could help.

Shared boundaries need more care, so we'll ask who owns the hedge and whether your neighbour needs to agree. Cutting back to your boundary doesn't give anyone the right to enter next door's land or damage their hedge. Our guide to overhanging trees and neighbours covers similar questions, and Citizens Advice can help if you disagree. The government's high hedges guidance explains how to complain to the council.

When should you have a hedge cut?

That depends on the species and how fast it grows, along with what's nesting in it. Birds nest at different times, so no single calendar date makes hedge cutting safe. Active bird nests are protected by law, and if we find one, the work waits or we change the plan so the nest isn't disturbed.

It's also worth getting in touch before a hedge gets away from you, because a neglected hedge narrows your options. A dying section needs its cause found before you pay for major shaping, as lack of light, root conditions, disease and poor past cutting can all limit what we can achieve.

Do TPO or conservation rules affect your hedge?

They can if there are trees in or beside the hedge, so we check before booking. Work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order generally needs council consent. A conservation area tree above 75 mm in stem diameter at 1.5 metres from the ground needs a section 211 notice at least six weeks before work.

Other restrictions can apply too, since some countryside hedgerows have their own legal protection and land under an agreement or planning condition may have extra requirements. Please mention anything like this when you get in touch, and see our tree permission guide for more.

How we plan and cut your hedge

Assessing the plants and the setting

We identify the plants, check for nests and look at how much privacy will remain after the cut. Where a hedge screens you from a neighbour or a busy road, a staged cut can be gentler than taking off all the height in one visit.

Safe cutting and clearing the clippings

Tall hedge work brings falling debris and access risks, so we plan it with people on the other side in mind. That means looking at who uses the path or road and how to keep them clear of the cutting. Your scope then says whether we're removing all clippings, cutting back overhanging growth and tidying the work area.

Why choose us for your hedge work?

Because we base the cut on your actual plants, the hedge you're paying to keep stays protected. The work and the clippings are set out in writing, and you'll get honest advice on how far your hedge can go. A hedge that gives you privacy and shelter is usually worth keeping, so we'd look at reducing it before removing it.

Where one has reached the end of its life, we can talk through taking it out, though that can affect wildlife and leave your garden exposed. Our tree felling and removal service covers large stems, and stump grinding can clear what's left.

What does hedge trimming cost in Leeds?

Height, length, species, density and access set the price, along with the volume of cuttings. A low hedge along an open lawn is a very different job from a tall boundary hedge beside a busy footpath. For staged renovation, we'll make clear whether later visits are priced separately. Our tree surgeon prices page has more on what shapes a quote.

  • Your postcode and the hedge's approximate length, height and width.
  • The species, if you know it.
  • The cut you want: a light trim, a height reduction or a side reduction.
  • Any steps, slopes or public paths nearby.
  • Any known nesting birds, boundary disputes or restrictions.
  • If you'd like all the cuttings taken away.

Photos help us identify the plants, so please email a full-length shot and a close-up to [email protected], and we'll come back to you with the next step.
