Stump grinding

Stump Grinding in Leeds to the Finish You Want

Get a quote

Our stump grinding service in Leeds clears old stumps so you can lay turf, level a path or prepare a new bed. We begin with your plans for the ground, because those set the depth and the finish.

A photo, the stump's width and the narrowest point on the way in give us a good start, and we then agree the job in writing, including what happens to the chip.

  • Written scope of work
  • Tree protection checked before cutting
  • Waste and stump work made clear

Professional stump grinding in Leeds

We grind the visible stump and a limited amount of nearby woody material, working at and below the surface to an agreed depth where the site allows. That gets rid of a trip hazard or a stump that's taking up useful space.

Grinding won't normally take out every root. Those left behind typically rot away over time, which is fine for a lawn, and we'll tell you what to expect before you book.

The stump grinding jobs we take on

Most of the grinding work we quote for falls into one of these five types.

Single stumps in lawns and beds

A lone stump is often the simplest job, but the depth still needs agreeing. For turf, we follow the RHS advice to grind to 20 to 25 cm. Paths, patios and planting beds can need a different depth, so we write yours into the quote.

Several stumps in one garden

We work through them in the order agreed, and we price them differently from a single large stump. It helps if you've measured and photographed each one, because moving a machine past awkward gates or steps affects the time needed.

Large, old or awkward stumps

Very wide stumps need extra working time or different equipment, and old, decayed wood can be irregular. A stump beside brickwork, a retaining wall or a timber fence can also leave little room, so we grind only as close as we can without risking damage.

Grinding after tree felling

If the tree is still standing, we can quote for the stump alongside tree felling and removal, because felling alone leaves the stump in place.

Preparing the ground for replanting

Replanting on the spot is sometimes possible, and we'll give you our view once we know the remaining roots, the soil and why the first tree failed. Fresh grindings are no substitute for good topsoil, so the new tree may need a slightly different position or better soil preparation. If disease was the cause, your choice of species and good site hygiene can matter too.

Stump grinding for home gardens and business sites

Homes and business premises get the same written scope, built around the finished surface you need. Front gardens and frontages bring their own questions, so please tell us about parking restrictions and how the stump is reached from the road.

Grinding alone may not suit a site due for foundations or deep digging, because those plans need advice specific to the build. Full excavation is a separate, more disruptive job that needs more access. Our guide to stump grinding vs stump removal compares the two, and we'll tell you if grinding isn't the right answer.

When is the best time to grind out a stump?

The best time is before you turf, pave, plant or lay out the new area, since the depth depends on what comes next. If you're still planning a tree removal, mention the stump at that stage too, so we can quote for both together.

Does a TPO or conservation area affect stump grinding?

Often it doesn't, but we look further if the tree had a Tree Preservation Order or stood in a conservation area, because any consent to remove it may have come with conditions. If you still have the original paperwork, please dig it out.

We also think about the trees you're keeping, as grinding can affect the roots of nearby trees that may have their own protection. Permission to fell one tree doesn't allow damage to another. The council's tree guidance and our tree permission guide explain how this works.

Our stump grinding process, from measuring to clear ground

Assessing the stump, the route and what's buried

We start with your narrowest point, because grinders vary in width and weight. A side passage can suit one machine but rule out another. Steps, steep slopes, soft ground or delicate paving can also block a route that looks wide enough. We confirm whether the route works before you book, and your photos show us whether we need to see the stump in person.

Before any grinding starts, we consider buried services, including electricity cables, water pipes, drains and irrigation. Their depth and position aren't always obvious, so please share what you know. If you spot a suspicious line, leave it alone and tell us instead of digging around it.

Safe grinding, then the chip and soil

On the day, we set up a working area and keep people and pets out of it while the machine runs. Old stumps can hide stones, nails, fencing wire or buried hard landscaping, so we check the stump and the ground around it. Anything that changes the plan gets raised with you before we carry on.

Grinding leaves more chip and soil than most people expect, because some of it comes from below ground. You might want it piled to one side, taken away or reused once you've checked it's suitable. Your quote states whether chip removal, backfilling, topsoil and levelling are part of the job.

Why book your stump grinding with us?

Book with us if you want the finish agreed before the machine arrives. A quote that only says "stump removed" leaves too much open, so ours gives the depth, the chip handling and the state of the ground afterwards. You'll also hear from us plainly if a route won't work or a site needs something other than grinding.

How much does stump grinding cost in Leeds?

The cost depends on the stump's width, how many stumps there are, the access and the depth, along with nearby obstructions and waste. A general per-stump figure wouldn't tell you much, so we quote from your photos and measurements. Our tree surgeon prices page explains what else to compare.

Your free stump grinding quote: what to send

A rough measurement is all we need to begin. Please use the form on this page to send:

  • Your postcode and the number of stumps.
  • The rough diameter of each one.
  • The narrowest access width, plus any steps or soft ground.
  • Nearby walls, drains or paving.
  • The finish you want, such as grass, planting or a patio.

Then email a photo of the whole stump, with something in the shot for scale, to [email protected]. We'll tell you how we'd approach it and what the quote will cover.
